Online Journalism Workshop 2010

So, this is a bit late, but I wanted to share the great work of the students in the Online Journalism Workshop that I co-teach with Professor Mike Shanahan at GW’s School of Media and public Affairs.

Much thanks to all of the students who gave their all to these pieces.

Everything Went Black

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

This video created by Zach Hanover, Alex Holt, Samantha Honig and Julie Hyman, generated a good deal of class discussion in SMPA-112 Intro to Digital Media this Spring.

I was mixed on all of the “stylistic” things that the students tried here, but they were well thought out, and maintained the emotional impact . . . still, it was interesting to get the diversity of views on what they did. In the end, for me, I think you should only put so many spices in the stew, or it may be over seasoned.

More to the point, see what you think:

Policom @ 25 Student Video

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I was quite impressed with this video that Joe Sangiorgio and Mike Stone produced in SMPA-112 Introduction to Digital Media. It’s worth noting that the team had a respectable cut to screen on 2 days after the event – great job guys!

Facebook Follies

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I had my first on-the-record interview last week with the GW Hatchet.

The article is called Professors get Facebook profiles to enhance classes.

Which is not particularly accurate to what I said in the interview, but whatever, it was fun.

New GW Page

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Spent part of the day making a new bio page on the GW site.

Digital Politics

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Fascinating event at GW this week.

Great panels, one with the web strategists from the McCain, Obama, and Clinton campaigns, and another with very interesting execs from the big social networking sites.

The highlight for me however was a film called 18 in 08 that I thought was just brilliant.

Docs in Progress

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

I finally made it out to one the Docs in Progress events.

This is a cool venue for filmmakers to get open feedback – takes thick skin.

I was especially impressed with Nina’s new film Matador, which will be completed later this Summer.
